Vietnamese Media Highlights Sivakorn Pu-Udom Who Makes the Indonesian U-23 National Team Scared to Death Against Guinea

Vietnamese media also highlighted the emergence of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) referee from Thailand, Sivakorn Pu-Udom, which made the Indonesian U-23 National Team feel nervous ahead of the play-off match against Guinea U-23.

The reason is, Sivakorn Pu-Udom always causes controversy when leading the U-23 Indonesian National Team matches. This is what can also make Shin Tae-yong’s team nervous before facing Guinea U-23.

“The Thai referee scared the Indonesian U-23 National Team ahead of the play-off match to determine Olympic tickets,” read the title of a Vietnamese media report, Soha.vn, published on Tuesday (7/5/2024).

Soha said that Sivakorn Pu-Udom’s presence in the VAR room was always detrimental to the Indonesian national team. This fact was not only presented at the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup, but also at the 2023 Asian Cup which took place last January.

“Indonesia also faces other concerns coming from the Thai VAR referee, Sivakorn Pu-Udom. “It is worth mentioning that both the Indonesian National Team and the U-23 National Team always fail in matches because of the interference of referee Sivakorn Pu-Udom,” he wrote.

One of the moments that made Indonesian football fans furious at that time was Sivakorn Po-Udom’s decision to approve Iraq’s second goal even though a player had been caught offside.

“In the 2023 Asian Cup, the Indonesian team lost to Iraq. “Sivakorn Pu-Udom was heavily attacked by Netizens for saying that Iraq’s second goal was invalid,” wrote Soha.vn in his review.

“Because a player was in an offside position when he attacked. “However, Sivakorn Pu-Udom, in his role in the VAR room, did not signal to the main referee,” he added.

Apart from that, Sivakorn Pu-Udom’s assignment also contributed to the three defeats of the Garuda Muda squad in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup. The first moment was the defeat in the Group A phase against Qatar.

In the knockout phase, the two minor results achieved by Shin Tae-yong’s team also involved the VAR referee from Thailand. This moment was precisely presented in the semifinal phase and the match for third place.

“After that, it was Indonesia U-23’s turn to suffer three defeats when Mr. Sivakorn Pu-Udom ran the VAR room. “These include losing 0-2 to Qatar in the group stage, losing 0-2 to Uzbekistan in the semifinals,” he wrote.

“And the defeat to Iraq in the match for third place. “After these three matches, public opinion in Indonesia criticized Sivakorn Pu-Udom,” he continued.

The referee and/or official for the 2024 Olympic playoff match between the Indonesian U-23 National Team versus Guinea in the Olympic playoff will be announced two hours before the match.
Until now, FIFA has not determined who the referee will lead the match.

“The match officials were announced two hours before kick off,” said the FIFA source in a written statement on Tuesday (7/5) afternoon.

FIFA assigned a total of 89 match officials for the 2024 Paris Olympic football, including controversial Thai referee Sivakorn Pu-udom.

Of this number, there are 21 main referees, 42 assistant referees, 20 VAR referees and six supports, where Sivakorn Pu-udom acts as the VAR referee.

There is a narrative circulating on social media that Sivakorn Pu-udom will be the VAR referee in the play-off between the Indonesian U-23 and Guinea U-23 national teams, which will determine a ticket to the Paris Olympics. However, this cannot be confirmed.

The match will take place at INF Clairefontaine, Clairefontaine-en-Yvelines, France, on Thursday (9/5/2024).

FIFA Hasn’t Given Him Any Assignment

FIFA has not yet named match officials for the Paris Olympic play-offs, including referees, assistant referees, VAR referees and VAR assistants.

However, netizens are already in an uproar over the issue that Sivakorn Pu-udom will be the VAR referee in the match between the Indonesian U-23 and Guinea U-23 national teams.

Sivakorn Pu-udom has previously been a VAR referee and VAR assistant three times when the Indonesian U-23 National Team competed in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup in Qatar.

Since 2013, Sivakorn Pu-udom has been a FIFA referee and has extensive experience officiating various international football tournaments.

Not long ago, Sivakorn Pu-udom played the role of VAR referee when the Indonesian U-23 National Team lost three matches in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup. Namely losing 0-2 to the Qatar U-23 National Team in the group stage, 0-2 from the Uzbekistan U-23 National Team in the semifinals, and 1-2 from the Iraq U-23 National Team in the match for third place.

Together with the main referee, the 36 year old referee was in the spotlight because he was deemed to be detrimental to the U-23 Indonesian National Team.
