Indonesian U-23 National Team Failed to Make it to the 2024 Olympics, Erick Thohir: There’s Still a Long Way to Go, We’re Aiming at the 2028 Edition!
The Indonesian U-23 national team failed to qualify for the 2024 Olympics after losing to Guinea U-23. The chairman of PSSI, Erick Thohir, remains proud of the struggle of Shin Tae-yong’s children, and has the ambition to win tickets to compete in the 2028 Olympics.
The Indonesian U-23 national team clashed with Guinea at INF Clairefontaine, Clairefontaine-en-Yvelines, Paris, Thursday (9/5/2024) evening WIB. Determined to win the final spot competing in the 2024 Olympics, the Garuda Muda Team was able to put up a fight.
The Indonesian U-23 national team recorded 51 percent possession of the ball and fired eight shots. However, a messy attack scheme and a lack of calm in taking advantage of opportunities meant that the Garuda Muda Team only got one shot on target.
As a result, the U-23 Indonesian National Team surrendered 0-1 to the U-23 Guinean National Team. Guinea’s only winning goal was scored by Ilaix Moriba in the 29th minute via the penalty spot.
These results meant that the U-23 Indonesian National Team failed to advance to the 2024 Olympics. Guinea won the last ticket to compete in the biggest sporting event, and was joined in Group A with the United States, New Zealand and host France.
“We haven’t succeeded in making it to the Olympics this time. However, the long journey and achievements made by the players, coaches and national team officials from the Asian Cup to the playoffs show that our football has the quality to appear at the Olympics,” said Erick Thohir.
“I salute you and we are targeting the next Olympics. Thank you for your struggle,” continued Erick, who watched live the struggle of Marselino Ferdinan cs. in Paris.
The man who also serves as Minister of BUMN said that the Indonesian National Team currently has a golden generation. With consistency and the right program, Erick Thohir is confident that the Garuda Team will continue to develop.
“This national team has a golden generation. There are Witan Marselino, Rizki Ridho, Ernando, plus naturalized players. Then we have a blueprint until 2045, and we consistently carry out long-term training,” he said.
“This means that the program we are running is already on track. We will be consistent and improve what is still lacking. After all, with the achievements of the U-23 Indonesian National Team, we have new pride and it has been proven that football is increasingly uniting Indonesia,” stressed Erick Thohir.

This match has presented many interesting things. Summarized the three reasons why the Indonesian U-23 national team failed to beat Guinea U-23. Check out the following review:
From the first minute Guinea U-23 immediately dominated the game. They did not wait for time to launch their attack repeatedly on Garuda Muda’s defense.
This situation is quite difficult for Witan Sulaeman et al. to be able to turn around to attack. There were several moments when the U-23 Indonesian National Team also posed a threat, but they were often easily beaten by their opponents.
Guinea U-23’s attack scheme also came from various sides in order to achieve victory. In this condition, the U-23 Indonesian National Team was overwhelmed by their attacks.
The Guinea U-23 midfield really dominated. When holding the ball, they were able to play it well and pass the ball to the front line to attack.
In the situation where the Indonesian U-23 National Team took over the game, Guinea U-23 also easily took it. In the one-on-one competition, Guinea was able to win so it was easy to build attacks.
In terms of ball control, Guinea showed that they appeared much more solid and neat.
The Indonesian U-23 national team is not without opportunities in this match. There are a number of potentially threatening attack schemes, including Pratama Arhan who is relied on in throw-ins.
Unfortunately, they often rush into execution. As a result, they did not manage to score a return goal to at least make the position even.
The Indonesian U-23 national team suffered a narrow defeat to Guinea in the 2024 Olympic play-offs. The team made by Shin Tae-yong lost 0-1 to Guinea U-23 at the Clairefontaine Stadium, Paris, France, Thursday (9/5/2024).
The single goal was scored via a penalty kick, Ilaix Moriba in the 29th minute. This defeat meant that the U-23 Indonesian National Team failed to appear at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In the first half, Indonesia U-23’s performance was less impressive. They were trapped by Guinea U-23 players. Understandably, in terms of skill, power and speed, Guinea U-23 is superior.
The penalty goal scored in the 29th minute also started from a quick counterattack by the team nicknamed Syli Nationale. Witan Sulaeman, who was trying to help defend, his foot hit the Guinea U-23 striker. The referee also pointed to the spot.
The performance of the Red and White squad improved in the second half. Nathan Tjoe A On was pushed from stopper to defensive midfielder. The composition of the front line was also added with the entry of Ramadhan Sananta.
The fighting power of the Indonesian players increased after Guiena failed to score a penalty in the middle of the second half. The opponent’s defense was shaky due to repeated attacks launched by Marselino Ferdinan et al. Unfortunately, the score of 0-1 in favor of Guinea U-23 did not change until the match was over.
The following is the report card of the Indonesian U-23 National Team players.
Goalkeeper
Ernando Ari: 7
Ernando made two important saves in this match. The performance is not bad. Because the only goal scored by Guinea came from a penalty.
Behind
Bagas Kaffa: 6.5
This right-back did not get many opportunities to play in the U-23 Asian Cup. That makes him fit for the playoffs. Bagas showed high fighting power on the field. Although several times he was overwhelmed when competing with his opponent in terms of body and speed.
M Ferrari: 6.5
Became the first player to be given a yellow card when the match had only been running for 7 minutes. Apart from that, Ferrari made 6 clearances. That was the highest in this match.
Komang Teguh: 6
He made several blunders with wrong passes in his own area in the first half. Unfortunately for him, at the start of the second half he suffered an injury. So Komang became the first player to be replaced.
Nathan Tjoe A On: 7
His contribution was only seen in the second half. Because in the first half he functioned as a defender. When encouraged to become a midfielder, Nathan can make Indonesia’s game more developed. The player from SC Heerenveen also made an important save at the Indonesian goalmouth in the middle of the second half.
Pratama Arhan: 6.5
Even though his area on the left side was penetrated several times by opponents, Arhan showed high fighting spirit. Even though he lost his posture, he did not hesitate to duel with the body to stop his opponent’s movements.
Ivar Jenner: 6.5
In the first half, the action was not very visible. Only in the second half was he able to set the tempo of the game. Occasionally he made a professional foul to break up the Guinea U-23 attack.
Marselino Ferdinand: 6.5
The condition of the Indonesian attacking midfielder looks less than optimal. Before the match, he was reported to be having muscle problems. Because of this, Marselino operates more in the middle. He doesn’t accelerate as often on the wing as usual. However, his role was still visible in the second half.
Kelly Sroyer: 6
His performance was less than optimal in this match. Kelly had difficulty getting past the Guinean players. The speed that Persik Kediri players rely on is only occasionally seen.
Rafael Struick: 6.5
This naturalized striker performed under top performance. Understandably, Struick lacked a ball supply. So he has to look for the ball in midfield. Meanwhile, in the second half, Struick played wide as a wing striker. But his stamina seemed to be drained.
Witan Sulaeman: 7
Serving as team captain, Witan appeared to appear tireless on the field. Unfortunately, he made a foul which resulted in a penalty in the middle of the first half. Apart from that, Witan’s acceleration was able to penetrate the opponent’s defense several times.
Alfeandra Dewangga: 6
Actually, he didn’t appear too bad. However, Dewa committed a violation which resulted in a penalty in the middle of the second half. Fortunately, Algassime Bah’s execution did not result in a goal.
Ramadan Sananta: 6
Coming off in the middle of the second half, Sananta was expected to be the deadlock breaker. Unfortunately, the performance is still below expectations. Because he also has no chance in this fight.
Hokky Caraka: 6
So the last player to enter as a substitute. Because he only came on in the 89th minute, he didn’t have enough time to show his contribution. You can count on your fingers how Hokky got the ball.

Shin Tae-yong stayed for a long time in the trainer’s technical area which was located around the bench for the U-23 Indonesian National Team players.
